Spring and autumn: flexible touring choices

For many lower-altitude routes, spring and autumn allow a comfortable balance of riding and time in towns. Valencia, coastal Catalonia and much of Andalusia are natural candidates. These are planning tendencies, not weather guarantees: inland plateaus and high roads can still be cold and exposed.

Summer: look beyond the headline temperature

High-mountain routes can be more practical in the warmer months, subject to current road access. Northern Spain offers a different climate from the southern interior, but rain remains possible. In hot regions, reduce riding hours, plan regular water stops and avoid designing a schedule that depends on pushing through the hottest part of the day.

Winter: keep altitude in the decision

A mild coastal forecast should not be used to judge a mountain pass. If winter is your only window, ask for a lower-altitude plan and a flexible day rather than a fixed list of high roads. Before every stage, review the forecast for the route’s highest point and check traffic or closure notices.
